Fat Who?
Fat Boo's Bakery is rooted in family, tradition, and the flavors of the American South.
Founder and owner Allison Cohen was raised in Southern California, but nearly every summer of her childhood was spent in Thomasville, North Carolina—the hometown of both her mother and father. Those summers were filled with family gatherings, home-cooked Southern meals, and unforgettable desserts lovingly prepared by generations of talented cooks.
Those cherished memories became the inspiration for Fat Boo's Bakery.
The bakery's namesake, "Fat Boo," was Allison's paternal grandmother, Ruby Boyles. Family lore tells that one of Allison's young cousins couldn't quite pronounce "Ruby" and instead called her "Booby." Over time, the nickname evolved into "Boo," and because Ruby was known for her short, round stature, she became affectionately known as "Fat Boo"—a name spoken with love by her family for decades.
Today, many of the bakery's offerings are based on Fat Boo's treasured recipes. Others come from the kitchens of Allison's aunts and relatives in Thomasville, while some are Allison's own creations, inspired by the comforting flavors, rich traditions, and warm hospitality of the Southern town that helped shape her childhood.
